A busy May continued for locally affiliated athletes with representation at six events of varying distances.
The largest turnout was at the Llangynhafal Loop Fell Race, a 4.5 mile event including 1,500 feet of climbing held within the Clwydian Hills. In blustery conditions, the 5 locally affiliated athletes were led home by Ifan Richards of Meirionnydd R.C., the Brithdir athlete 2nd finisher in a field numbering 101 in a time of 39.39mins. The was also a sterling performance from Dylan Jones of Aberdyfi, the sole Bro Dysynni athlete in action claiming a 6th placed finish in a time of 41.54mins. A further trio of Meirionnydd R.C. athletes followed, with Mark Atherton of Llan Ffestiniog finishing in 16th spot in a time of 46.24mins with the Dolgellau based duo of Nich Bradley and Juliet Edwards following in respective times of 56.14mins & 57.48mins.
A trio of Meirionnydd R.C. athletes headed to Cheshire, their chosen event being the 13.1 mile Shell Chester Half Marathon. Leading home the trio was Amanda Price of Brithdir in a time of 1hr 52.52mins followed by Gaenor Smith of Dolgellau & Heidi Roden of Arthog in times of 1hr 58.02mins & 2hrs 02.22mins.
There was also dual local representation at the Newtown 10k recently as Ricky Francis of Talyllyn represented Meirionnydd R.C. and completed the course in a time of 43.42mins whilst Marj Griffiths of Aberystwyth represented Bro Dysynni A.C. with her time of 66.50mins also claiming age category success within the Female Over-65 section of the event.
Two of the aforementioned athletes in action at the Llangynhafal Loop event were also in action at the Moel Y Gest Fell Race near Porthmadog, an event which marked the halfway point of the Joe Brown Tuesday Night Fell Running Series organised by Eryri Harriers. On this occasion where was a runners-up spot for Dylan Jones, 2nd home in a time of 32.16mins whilst Nich Bradley followed in a time of 45.38mins.
Also in repeat action was Marj Griffiths, once again claiming age category success in the Female Over-65 section, on this occasion at the Rhayadar 5k event in a time of 30.44mins.
A trip to Lampeter was also made recently by Glyn Rowlands of Arthog, his race of choice being the 16.5 mile Sarn Helen Hill Race, the Meirionnydd R.C. athlete covering the course in a time of 2hrs 29.03mins which claimed an overall 43rd spot in the final placings.
A huge well done should also be afforded to all the local female athletes, affiliated and unaffiliated, who have been in action recently at the Race For Life events, raising staggering amounts for the Cancer Research UK charity.
There is local action this coming Saturday as Dolgellau will play host to the 21st running of the Royal Ship Hotel sponsored Ras Y Gader as well as to the numerous junior races sponsored by Y Sospan Restaurant. With the junior events starting at 11.00a.m. and the senior race at 1.00p.m., Eldon Square will be awash with athletes, all eager to take on the challenge presented to them.
