Local athletes have taken to the mountains in recent
weeks, with representatives at 5 separate fell racing events.
Two local athletes ventured to the village of Priest
Weston in Shropshire, their chosen event being the Corndon Three Peaks
Classic Fell Race, a 7 mile event which included an overall 1,850 feet of
climbing. Leading home the duo was prolific racer, Ifan Richards of
Brithdir, the Meirionnydd Running Club athlete claiming an overall 4th
placed finish in a time of 44.17mins. Also finishing well in this event, in
an overall 27th position was Dylan Jones of Aberdyfi, the Bro Dysynni
athlete home in a time of 50.13mins.
Dewi Roberts of Blaenau Ffestiniog was the sole local
representative at the Llangynhafal Loop Fell Race held on Moel Famau near
Mold. The Bro Dysynni athlete performed well over the 4.75 mile course,
which included 1,750 feet of climbing, to finish in an overall 18th
position out of the 108 competitors in a time of 47.12mins.
Midweek races have also been very much to the fore
recently with the start of the Eryri Harriers Great Arete Tuesday
Evening series of fell races.
The 1st race of the series was held on Moel Tryfan in
Rhosgadfan with seven local athletes taking on the challenge. Leading home
the 'Magnificent Seven' was Tom Roberts of Dolgellau, the Meirionnydd
Running Club athlete claiming a 4th place finish in a time 19.39mins. Three
Ffestiniog based athletes followed as Hefin Jones (Meirionnydd Running
Club) crossed the line alongside Dewi Roberts as they both finished in a
time of 20.28mins with Bryn Humphries (Meirionnydd Running Club) following
in a time of 21.51mins. Dave Whittey of Llanelltyd was the next finisher
from the strong Meirionnydd turnout as he crossed the line in a
time of 22.11mins with Dion Roberts of Blaenau Ffestiniog following, the
Dysynni youngster home in an excellent time of 23.26mins. The seven
were completed by a resurgent Graeme Stringer of Llanelltyd who completed
the Meirionnydd turnout in a time of 26.01mins.
The 2nd race in the series was the Foel Lus event held
near Penmaenmawr. On this occasion the local contingent of 6 was led home
by Ifan Richards, 3rd overall, in a time of 23.24mins. Dewi Roberts
followed in 27.02mins with Dave Whittey and Graeme Stringer next home in
respective times of 28.44mins & 31.03mins. Making a rare race outing
was Andy Sanderson of Llanbedr, home in a time of 31.32mins, with Nich
Bradley of Dolgellau completing the Meirionnydd-based turnout as he came
home in 33.48mins.
The 3rd race was held at Mynydd Mawr near Caernarfon and
on this occasion Hefin Jones led home the local quartet in a time of
36.38mins. He was followed by Bryn Humphries in 39.23mins, Dave Whittey in
39.36mins & Graeme Stringer in 42.13mins.
The sole road running event which has attracted
local interest recently was the Chester Spring 5 Mile Road Race. Of the two
local competitors in action on the evening, Nigel Evans (Bro Dysynni
A.C.) of Dolgellau came home in an impressive time of 33.03mins with
Ffestyn Williams, formerly of Llanbedr, following in 36.42mins.
