Eight local athletes recently headed to the Wrexham area to
take part in the Farndon 10k road race, with 4 of the 8 returning home having
gained victory in their respective age categories.
In a race won by Stephen Crowe (Ellesmere Port Running Club)
in a time of 33.50mins, the local contingent were led home by Tom Roberts of
Dolgellau, claiming a top 10 finish, as well as setting a new Meirionnydd
Running Club record for the distance, as he crossed the line in a time of
36.20mins.
Next local athlete home was Ffestyn Williams, originally of
Llanbedr, but now based in Chester, crossing the line on 45.30mins with Frankie
Vaughan of Ganllwyd hot on his heels, the Merionnydd R.C. athlete finishing in
a time of 46.09mins.
The first of the quartet claiming age category success was
John Tee of Blaenau Ffestiniog, the Bro Dysynni athlete victorious in the Male
Over-60 category, crossing the line in a time of 49.39mins. Club-mate, Malcolm
Taylor of Criccieth followed in a time of 52.00mins, before Brenda Jones of
Llanelltyd became the 2nd Dysynni age category winner on the day, successful in
the Female Over-65 section in a time of 53.05mins. Barrie Jackson of Bala
followed, the Meirionnydd runner victorious in the Male Over-70 category
in a time of 57.17mins whilst Sheila Symonds of Dolgellau completed the age
category victories, the Bro Dysynni athlete winning the Female Over-75 section
in a time of 90.44mins.
Local athletes were also in action at Machynlleth recently,
their chosen venue being the Bro Dyfi leisure centre for the 3rd race in the
2010 Earlybird Winter Aquathlon Series. Claiming overall victory at the event,
as well as the relay section of the race, were Donna Cartwright of
Dolgellau & Ifan Richards (Meirionnydd R.C.) of Brithdir, the former
completing the 400 metre swimming leg in a time of 6.38mins, the latter
completing the 5k running leg in 16.41mins to produce a cumulative winning time
of 23.19mins.
Claiming an overall 3rd placed finish as well as 2nd place
in the relay section were Kevin Hamilton (Cerist Tri) & Dylan Jones (Bro
Dysynni A.C.) in a cumulative time of 23.50mins, whilst the Meirionnydd Running
Club duo of Huw Brassington & Ffion Griffiths came home in a pleasing
32.05mins.
There is local action this coming Saturday as Llanuwchllyn
will play host to the Organic Aran Lamb sponsored Ras Yr Aran. The 10
mile event which includes 2,500 feet of climbing is due off at 1.00pm with the
shorter 2 mile Ras Garth Fawr aimed at runners aged 10 + due off at 1.15pm. The
race headquarters for the event will be the Eagles Inn in Llanuwchllyn.
