A total of 9 local athletes represented their respective local clubs at the UK Short Course, Welsh Seniors
& Masters Trail Running Championships which were held at Ponterwyd near Aberystwyth recently.
The weekend of racing consisted of 3 events. Saturday saw Sialens Y Barcud Coch, an 11 mile trail
running event which included a total of 2,530 feet of climbing. Also on the Saturday was the 4 mile
Junior Race, whilst Sunday saw the gruelling 18 mile Ras Y Diafol take place.
A total of 6 locally affiliated athletes took on Sialens Y Barcud Coch with Ifan Richards of Brithdir
leading home the contingent, the Meirionnydd Running Club athlete placing 6th overall in a time of
1hr 17.28mins. There was a 'battle royale' as a mere 34 seconds seperated the next three local
finishers, with the Bro Dysynni duo of Dylan Jones of Aberdyfi & Dewi Roberts of Blaenau Ffestiniog
finishing in times of 1hr 23.19mins & 1hr 23.53mins and sandwiched in-between them was Tom Roberts
of Dolgellau, the Meirionnydd Running Club athlete crossing the line in a time of 1hr 23.20mins.
After a break from competitive action, their was a dynamic return for John D. Smith of Dolgellau,
the Meirionnydd R.C. athlete claiming victory and gold medal status in the Over-60 category of the
Welsh Championships as he crossed the line in a terrific time of 1hr 47.52mins. The Meirionnydd R.C.
quartet in action on the day were completed by Victor Gretton, home in a time of 2hrs 15.32mins.
Two local juniors claimed 1st & 2nd in the Male Under-17 race which covered a distance of 4 miles.
Leading home the duo was the ever-improving Alex Lanz of Dolgellau, the Meirionnydd R.C. runner home
in 21.27mins whilst his Bro Dysynni counter-part, Dion Roberts of Blaenau Ffestiniog, crossed
the line in 22.58mins.
