The grounds of St. Davids College in Llandudno recently played host to the second league fixture out of five which constitute the 2012/13 Grand Prix Express North Wales Cross Country League.
As with the first league fixture, the headlines were made by the mens team affiliated to Meirionnydd Running Club as a squad of 14 runners further consolidated a strong start made by the club. On this occasion, the Meirionnydd squad were led home by Glyn Griffin, the Llanfrothen based athlete claiming an overall 21st place finish in a time of 37.32mins. There was another creditable performance from Alex Lanz, the Dolgellau athlete home in 37.49mins, clear of Aberdyfi based colleague, Dylan Jones, who followed in 39.41mins. Kevin Jones of Dolgellau was the next local finisher in 39.59mins whilst Jamie Evans of Bryncrug & Clive Edgington of Friog had a race long battle, home in respective times of 41.12mins & 41.18mins. The 7th Meirionnydd runner home was Alan Jones, the Blaenau Ffestiniog based athlete crossing the finishing line in 41.59mins, with Dai Whittey of Llanelltyd displaying both vim and vigour as he came home in 43.02mins. Arfon Hughes of Dolgellau & Ricky Francis of Talyllyn continued the Meirionnydd procession in times of 44.15mins & 45.16mins, to be followed by D. Hughes, home in a time of 45.25mins. The effervescent Dave Seabourne of Dolgellau was the next Meirionnydd finisher in 46.42mins with Alun Steadman of Aberdyfi following in 50.51mins. John Nolan was the sole Bro Dysynni male athlete in action, completing the event in a time of 51.30mins with Dai Rice completing the Meirionnydd turnout as the Dolgellau based athlete came home in a time of 52.32mins.
After the 2nd of the 5 league fixtures, Meirionnydd Running Club maintained their 2nd spot within Division 1 whilst Bro Dysynni hold on to 14th spot within the 2nd tier.
In the female race, Brenda Jones of Llanelltyd produced a storming performance, as a time of 34.24mins ensured age category victory within the Female Over-70 section for the Bro Dysynni stalwart, whilst club colleague, Yolanda Marconi-Nolan, claimed 3rd spot within the Female Over-60 section in an excellent time of 36.27mins.
After the 2nd of the 5 league fixtures, Bro Dysynni A.C. sit comfortably in 7th spot within Division 2.
There is local action this coming Saturday lunchtime (10th November), as Llanfachreth near Dolgellau will play host to the Rhobell Fawr Fell Race. The race, which is also the first fixture within the 2012/13 Meirionnydd Winter Race Series, measures 6.4 miles in distance and includes an overall 1,900 feet of climbing. The main race is due off at 12.00 Noon with a Junior / Short Fell Race due off shortly afterwards.
