| A small but enthusiastic field gathered in Ganllwyd for the first staging of the
Tyn-y-Groes Hill Race since 1987. Although only 2.1 miles, the race included a punishing 700 feet climb within the first mile which, along with the humid conditions, made it tough going for the competitors. One runner relatively unaffected by the conditions was Steve Gilliland of Tywyn, who claimed an ultimate comfortable victory in 17:37mins. In second starting his annual comeback was Dave Wittey of Llanelltyd in 19.51mins. Tony Hodgson(also Llanelltyd) put his recent 3 peaks Yacht race behind him to claim third in 20.56. The ladies produced a comfortable victory for Andrea Goode of Arthog in 23.25 mins. She was clear of Brenda Jones of Llanelltyd in 28.09 with Gwyneth Evans (Ganllwyd) claiming third in 36.53. The first local finishers living within two miles of the venue were popular husband and wife team Dylan and Gwyneth Evans (23.43 and 36.53 respectively). The race was also given an international flavour, as Tomasz Waliszewski of Poland finished in 36.53. Andy Unwin (report to Cambrian News). |
